Overbite correction with Invisalign
Overbite is a pathology characterized by the upper teeth that are well ahead of the lower teeth. The patient bites badly, something that is sometimes very noticeable, but other times it is very light and barely noticeable.
This is usually a consequence of a class II bad-occlusion, in which the maxilla is advanced relative to the mandible.
Typically, in a person with a correct bite, the teeth of the upper and lower arches close with minimal overlap. In overbite patients, the maxillary front teeth can even completely cover the jaw teeth.
When the upper incisors cover one third of the lower incisors, it is considered a deep overbite.
Problems associated with overbite
This pathology generally triggers other types of problems, the main ones being:
- The aesthetic problem. Overbite is usually accompanied by crowding of the upper canines and / or incisors. Although it does not necessarily happen in all patients.
- Patients end up biting their gums. This in turn generally generates periodontal and bruxism problems, which end up causing wear of the enamel of the lower arch parts.
- It also hinders oral hygiene and increases the tendency to have more cavities. Due to overcrowding, which makes cleaning teeth difficult.
Is it possible to avoid overbite?
We must bear in mind that, in the vast majority of cases, it is not possible to avoid overbite. Because genetic inheritance plays a determining role.
Due to this same factor, there is a family history of overbite in most patients with this type of malocclusion.
Some habits that take place in childhood can contribute to children developing an overbite, this would be a modifiable factor. Among these, we can consider using the pacifier for a long time or sucking on the thumb.
Invisalign treatment in overbite
Invisalign invisible orthodontia is a very appropriate technique to correct overbite problems. Invisalign allows a series of differential forces to be applied to the teeth with maximum control and, most importantly, with minimal discomfort.
The Invisalign treatment is an aesthetic and functional system, since it is based on transparent splints that can be removed and placed. They are almost imperceptible in daily use.
These transparent splints, like other orthodontic appliances, make progressive movements on the teeth to achieve a harmonious and functional smile.
In the case of Invisalign orthodontic treatment, the manufacturing process is adapted to each patient, depending on the design that the orthodontist has made using the software.
Treatment plan and Invisalign Aligner Manufacturing
Invisalign removable splints are tailored to fit the patient’s mouth. Therefore, it is essential to have accurate mouth records. We scan the patient’s teeth with the iTero scanner to avoid the use of traditional and annoying pastes.
This 3D digital record is sent electronically to Align Technology and we began to customize, through the software, the force systems that we will transmit to the teeth using the transparent aligners.
-The start of treatment with Invisalign
For the treatment to be successful, and especially to meet the established times, it is necessary for the patient to use the aligners a minimum of 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, drinking liquids other than water and brushing the teeth. teeth.
Accessories are also often required in almost all treatments. The accessories are small composite reliefs that are attached to the tooth. With them it is possible to carry out certain movements that the aligner does not achieve on its own. The placement of the accessory is personalized, as is the case with the Invisalign treatment.
-Refinements
At this stage, the orthodontist assesses the condition of the mouth and the condition of the teeth.
Sometimes, the orthodontist appreciates that the result obtained during the treatment is improvable and then it is necessary to scan the patient’s mouth again, and request new sets of aligners from the factory: this is the refinement.
-The end of Invisalign treatment: retention
When the orthodontist finishes the Invisalign treatment, it is no longer necessary to use the accessories and the retention stage begins.
The teeth have what is called “memory” and therefore tend to return to their original position once the dental appliances are removed.
For this reason, the retention phase is one of the most important of the treatment, since it allows maintaining the results achieved over time.
There are two types of retainers that are placed in the patient’s mouth after completing the aligner process:
Fixed retainers:
These are thin sheets of wire that are placed on the inside of the teeth, from tusk to tusk, both upper and lower.
Removable retainers:
They can be of many types of night retainers. The most common are plastic sleeves, like aligners, but stiffer and slightly thicker (1 millimeter).
The hours indicated by the orthodontist will be carried. They will normally be the hours of sleep.
