Is Invisalign for kids?
With developments in dentistry, metal braces are not the only effective treatment for correcting crooked teeth in kids. Clear aligners or Invisalign are as effective as metal braces for straightening teeth. In some cases, the treatment process may even be faster. The only difference between metal braces and Invisalign is that with aligners there is no appearance of wires and brackets which often brings a feeling of self-consciousness. This is quite common with traditional metal braces. Although, the question is often asked, is Invisalign a good option for children?
As kids grow, their smile grows with them. The perfect time to start orthodontic treatment is at the age of 6 to 10 years, this is known as phase 1 of the treatment. At this stage the orthodontist addresses a developing problem and sees issues that may need early treatment. The treatment has a positive experience, predictable results and is as safe for kids as it is for adults.
Benefits of Invisalign
Although aligner treatment requires equal care and responsibility, one of the main benefits of Invisalign over metal braces is that you can take them out whenever you want. However, for the treatment to be most effective, you need to wear the retainers for 20 to 22 hours in a day. You are only advised to remove them while eating, brushing and flossing.
- Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign are taken out for cleaning teeth. Therefore, your kid will not need to make any major adjustments to their dental routine and can continue to keep their teeth clean and healthy. It also reduces the risk of gum disease and cavities.
- Another benefit of Invisalign is that they have to be removed while eating. This will not restrict your kid’s diet and will not interfere with everyday life.
- Kids generally need braces to help there teeth move in the right position sometimes children don’t feel self-conscious with crooked teeth and braces. Invisalign are almost invisible, so your kid will not have to go through any source of anxiety.
- Invisalign is less painful and more comfortable, as there is no risk of broken brace brackets.
When can children use Invisalign
It is not unusual for children to want to remove the aligners because of discomfort or just sheer curiosity. What’s more, they might forget to clean them before putting it back in or even forget where they put the trays. Whatever the reason, this can significantly affect the treatment process. Moreover, just as teens and adults, children are also as self-conscious about their smiles and choose Invisalign for the near-invisibility benefits. Children losing the aligners and taking the trays out can compromise treatment.
Invisalign are a safe and effective way for improving the appearance of teeth in children who have the right dental development. However, it is important for children to be cooperative and motivated enough while the treatment is going on. In addition, treatment should be started at an age when children are responsible enough to go along with treatment and take directions well.
